 "Excellent product." 2010-05-28

I bought a pair of these to replace a Philips SBC HN110 Noise Cancelling (NC) headset that started to break apart on me. For a compact headset the PXC-350 is considerably more bulky than the Philips set I had previously but the size of the PXC-350 is actually a bonus since the smaller headsets tend to make my ears ache after about an hour of use. The PXC-350, however, I can wear for hours without encountering this problem. For a headset this size it folds down and fits into a surprisingly thin case that has a stiff outer shell for stowage in a briefcase or a suitcase or backpack. The PXC-350 also uses replaceable AAA batteries (I use rechargeable NiMH batteries). This is a lot better than some other headphones that have built in non replaceable rechargeable batteries. I didn't like the placing of the manual volume adjuster. I would have preferred it to sit higher on the cord closer to the shells. On the other hand the chord is easily user replaceable if it is damaged (Just pull at it sideways where it attaches to the left hand shell), provided you can track down somebody who sells Sennheiser spares. A spares supply is not a given with headphones. Many manufacturers apparently do not make spares for their headsets, even the expensive ones.

I'm no audio expert but the sound quality seems excellent to me. The headset does a decent job of passively filtering out high frequency sound while the NC feature is supposed to deal with low frequency noise which it does reasonably well. Anybody expecting to turn on the NC and **not hearing any ambient sounds at all** is going to be disappointed. The best way I can describe the effect of the NC is that it "dampens" low frequency ambient sounds that would otherwise "reverberate" in the shells of the headset which is especially annoying when you are listening to music at low volume levels such as at the beginning of a song. When the PXC-350s Noise Cancelling is feature turned on there is a slight "hiss" in the headphones but that is common to all NC headphones and not noticeable when music is playing. I tested my PXC-350 headphones by listening to music on the PXC-350 with my TV (which is connected to a small subwoofer) switched on. I set the TV to a much higher than normal volume level and started playing an action movie with lots of explosions and shooting. I was hardly aware of the TV being on as long as the music was playing unless I set the TV to extremely high volume levels and even then only the loudest of the explosions and other noise was audible while listening to music with the PXC-350 and the NC switched on. The second the music stopped I could hear the TV again but the noise was considerably reduced. Basically the PXC-350 does a quite decent job at **reducing** the inconvenience of all kinds of moderate to loud ambient noise.

Having tested a number of NC headphones in all price classes, I'd say the PXC-350 is a good quality product which one would expect from German engineering and represents a quite good value for the price being asked here. If you are looking for NC headphones I'd rather shell out for the PXC-350 right away than buy smaller and/or less expensive NC headphones and be disappointed.

"Well worth the money - Bose, no thanks!!!" 2010-05-20
By deloco (Western Isles, Scotland)
The Sennheiser PXC 350 are a bargain in the over-priced world of Noise Canceling headphones.

I first bought this model over a year ago for my regular flights to Africa and Europe. They are brilliant for music on journeys and amazing with in-flight movies. No more foam headphones handed out by the stewardesses for me. These make a huge difference for listening to anything and everything. The noise canceling is also top notch. You will never be able to block out all noise no matter what type you use but these do a damn fine job of cutting out most noises. Try sitting in the plane cabin with the noise canceling on, then switch it off. Listen to the roar that you hadn't noticed whilst wearing them. Then switch them back on and slip back into your own quiet world.

I have read other reviews that say these are not Audiophile quality. Well they sound better than anything Bose has come up with and at a far better price. Don't get me wrong I like a lot of Bose products and use a Wave sound system in the house and a Sounddock for my ipod. But just because it says Bose on the headphones and it costs a fortune, this does not mean that they are the bees knees in this market. These PXC350's are better sounding and better value. And for the majority of people these are more than audiophile enough. After all what source are they using for music or film. An ipod or other MP3 player. A portable dvd or laptop. An inflight movie option. None of these are audiophile systems to be fair. Yes, perhaps if your hi-fi system at home is your pride and joy and cost the same as your car (or more) then your system may show up these cans as having a few shortcomings but in the real world these are more than good enough.

They are big-ish but very comfortable and light and I have worn them for 8 hours constantly on long haul flights with no problems - just a bit sweaty round the cups. You do not need a massive sized head either for these to fit (as claimed in another review). Any normal sized heid will accommodate these nicely. You get a nice carry case with airplane adapter, 6.3mm phono adapter and 2 x AAA batteries. The batteries have lasted me a long time and this is with constant use when on flights. I carry a spare pair but have yet to use them.

My only complaint. I am now on my second pair as I left my first ones on a plane somewhere. Somebody scored well with that one but I had absolutely no hesitation in ordering another pair immediately. I cannot recommend these highly enough and have yet to find a situation where you could wish for something different / better / more expensive. I'm sure the PXC 450's are also very good but at £100 more I don't think the talk-through facility is enough to justify the price difference. After all, if somebody speaks to you, it's surely only polite to remove the phones to answer.

Buy these with confidence - unless you must have the Bose name hanging on the side of your head and don't mind throwing money away.

 "Great value mid-range cans" 2010-05-13
By Mr. J. Clark
I'll begin with three basic remarks.

1) Headphones are like shoes - you should try them on before you buy. We all have ears and heads that are different shapes. So if you buy a pair blind over the Internet, don't moan if they don't fit!

2) Yes, these are big. That is the point - they are made to cover the ears entirely. That said, they are nothing like as bulky or heavy as professional cans.

3) The circuitry in noise cancelling headphones cancels out background noise. It won't shut out Mr Important bawling into his mobile, although the ear-enveloping form of the PXC 350s will cut him down to size.

The PXC 350s sit in the midrange between the likes of the Sony MDRNC7B's and the PXC 450s/ Bose QC3s. They are good value. Thanks to very soft pads, they sit comfortably on the ears, although they may grip a little too tightly if you have a big head like me. They are well made, although a little plain compared to the PXC 450s. The lead is detachable - you just have to read the manual. The PXC 350s are great at cutting out train or plane noise - from what I can tell, about half of the benefit comes from the circuitry and half from the phones' structure. The sound is good - not audiophile, but certainly good enough for even the best MP3 players, and for most home hi-fis. These are, however, not phones for those who have spent too much time clubbing and are a little mutton - at very high levels, there is noticeable distortion. The phones are also a little bass-heavy, but that is just taste, and depends on how your ears are made. Finally, battery life is very good. OK, so there is no charger/ rechargeables with the phones - they had to cut corners somewhere. So there you have it - a very nice pair of headphones at a moderate price point.

 "Noise cancelling headphones" 2010-05-10
By Terence A. Boley
Searched for over-ear noise-cancelling headphones and found several recommended but the one that did significantly better than others was the Sennheiser brand. Bought the PXC 350 and can recommend it too. It is comfortable to wear and gives good sound quality. Not cheap but worth the money.

"So glad I went for these" 2010-04-22
By T. Morley (UK)
These were my first pair of noise-canceling headphones. I had only ever experienced noise-canceling headphones previously in the gadget shops of airport waiting lounges.... and Ive always been blown away by them and have long wanted a pair. However, those headphones on display in airport lounges are invariably Bose, and those are way beyond my budget. My concern has always been, would a product at one third of the price of those that I'd tried be one third of the quality or effectiveness? Reading the technical specs made no difference to me - i had no idea what 85% noise reduction was like by comparison to 75% noise reduction. So in the end my criteria for purchase was £100 budget, a known brand, and customer reviews. And so I went for the PXC350's... and I wasn't disappointed :-) These are great!

I have just traveled back from Italy on trains and coaches (negotiating french train strikes and ash-grounded planes) and these headphones became my best friend on this long, boring and stressful journey.

Despite, buying and carrying with me a pair of re-chargable AAAs, the batteries that came supplied have not yet given up! Whats that? at least 20 hours? Brilliant!

They fit quite tight - ideally i'd prefer just a little less pressure on the sides of my head, but they dont touch my ears and the cushioning is soft and comfy. The inline volume control is great and the cable is satisfyingly thick (enough to make you think it is serious and wont kink or snap)

I love them, and they give me exactly the same sense of amazement as those 3 times the price. Would not hesitate to recommend them :-)
