This is a nice upgrade from my Sony MDR-EX85LP and Apple MA850G/A In-Ear Headphones. I hate the apple headphone. Thank god I have sold it last week for Eur 40. I got it for Eur 79 but there is no point of keeping it if not using.
My MDR-EX85LP is ok. It has serves me well for the past 3 years. I have been using them especially for running even when it raining and it is still doing good.
After reading a lot of good reviews about the new MDR-EX500, I have decided to give it a try and upgrade my MDR-EX85LP . Well, it does not dissapoint me when I received it this morning. It takes me about 30 seconds to fell in love with my upgrade. The bass is a lot clearer than the MDR-EX85 and Apple. I could also feel the clarity of the left n right sound coming from the earphone. I am already impressed with it now although I know that this earphone has not burn in yet as many reviewers mentioned.
Now I just wonder, how good is the higher end Sony MDR-EX700 to compare with this MDR-EX500. The price is tripled but is the quality is tripled as well? :)
I will update the performance when it is use when running/jogging.

I bought these in June 2010 to replace a very old pair of Sony MDR EX70lp's which I got back in 2002. They really are quite dissapointing. The bass is ok but requires a high bass setting to really hear it with any feel, and the treble and mid are far to high.
The overall sound quality is quite good, and admitidely is slightly better overall than the EX70's, however the comfort levels are something else. Trying to put these in is like trying to insert coconuts into your ears. The silicone earbuds themsleves are not very well designed and do not appear to be designed for Human ears. The driver unit is to big and feels like your wearing a bluetooth headset.
Sound Quality 8/10
Bass 5/10
Design/Comfort 3/10
I'm sticking to my EX70's, which im my opinion are still better, cheaper, and WAY more comfortable.

Look = 10/10
Sound quality =9/10 best your gonna get for less than £50
Reliabilty = 10/10(had them ages now and no problems
I have always been a fan of sonys headphones but these are by far superior to any other ones Ive ever had especially their predeccesor the Sony MDR-EX300SLB's (which were still amazing and lasted longer than any headphones ive ever had in my life-about 1.5
years).
Ive been using them with the sony walkman NWZ-A729 which has an amazing equalizer and sounds brilliant.
The headphones do take a few days to settle in and a little but of adjustment with the equalizer but when they are worn in a little you will be blown away.
Obviously you could spend more and get the next step up , the Sony MDR-EX700 but do you really wanna pay around £139 9the current price as of 12/05/10)?? I think £45 , what I paid is a fantastic bargan for such a quality pair of headphones.
Another benefit I noticed when compared to the MDR-EX300SLB was the length of the jack cord , on the EX300SLB its ridiculously short provided with an extension cable , however these have an extremely long cable which is really useful especially when your listening to headphones late at night on the pc or if your mp3s in your bag etc.
They also look amazing , metallic silver = super stylish
Overall couldnt be better unless they were the Sony MDR-EX700 at almost triple the price!!!!

I previously used Sennheiser CX 400's, they broke in an unfortunate accident, but I have always thought they were a bit Trebley, so for the replacement I purchased Sony MDR-EX300SLB's as the driver unit was larger. I was converted they were fantastic, amazing Bass response, and I started to pick out words and instruments in music that I had never heard before. When I lost them I was going to buy another pair, but instead decided to go for the next pair up. I honestly didn't think they would be much better. Well it seem I was right, when I first got these Headphones I was underwhelmed, there was a harshness to the sound, high frequencies seemed to ache at loud volumes..
Well I read reviews, and discovered that these headphones have a "burn in" period. If you purchase these, (and I recommend you do), give them 8-10 hours of high volume Heavy Metal before judging them. The sound just keeps getting better, up till the point where It becomes an absolute pleasure to wear them. The clarity and dynamics are there, the bass is clear and undistorted. Just be mindful of the fact that; High quality headphones do not make 128kbps Mp3s sound awesome, they show the lack of encoded information. You can really hear the difference between different bit-rates (much more so than cheaper pairs), >192kbps is essential, (or use a CD), if you wish to enjoy these headphones at their best.. If I lost these, I'd buy another pair, without a doubt.

I was just worried about the comfort of these, since they look so different from anything I've tried, and they are actually very comfortable! I had a pair of MDR-EX082 and these are undoubtedly preferable. The pouch is useful, but no one will actually use it for short periods of time, and it would be nice only if my mp3 player fit in there, but it doesn't. Also I miss a cord clip, so that the usage is even more comfortable, but none shipped, had to use one from sennheiser.
The audio quality? Great!
Build? Fairly nice!
