First of all - these headphones are overrated. It is not as overrated as Skullcandy headphones (e.g. the ones promoted by Snoop), but still there are better headphones you can buy even for much less money. The headphones are not bad really, but the price in not the value you get. Now let's go in deeper details. I will start with the pros first.
These headphones have pretty good noise cancelation. They seem to be better in that aspect than majority of closed back headphones. This may be a high advantage if you listen to music in loud places. As some more experienced headphone users may know the noise calncelation also means that sound may seem not very natural on some frequencies. These headphones do have such issue as well, but it is not very noticeable and if you did not hear better phones you will be happy with the sound signature of these.
Other pros... I cant find any although I would love to. Yes, they do sound good. Yes, the build quality is fine. Yes, they look quite good, but... look at brands such as Sennheiser, AKG, Denon or Beyerdynamic - for the same money they offer much better value such as HD600, DT880, DT770, AH-D2000. They all have better build quality and sound. These companies produce headphones since many, many years, they have experience and they create products for serious audiophiles. If I was to chose headphones from this price range I would definitely not buy Beats. It is not because I am a fanboy (I do not own any headphones from mentioned brands) or hater, but because I had the ability to listen to them carefully. Even HD595, which cost almost twice less than Beats are better. People from the head-fi.org have a massive knowledge and years of experience. Even they seem to think that with whole respect to Betas good sound, they produce noise comparing to HD595.
They way I would summarise it all - Beats are good, but should cost at least twice less. Only then they would present a good value for the money. You may find them to be very good to show off to your friends but trust me - if you show them e.g. HD600 they will be more impressed not only by good looking and better build quality, but by the sound as well. Beats are a good step up from generic headphones, but they just can not much more experienced brands.
Some people may be confused why I did not write about the way these headphones sound. Well... I had a chance to listen carefully to all of the headphones I mentioned. I listened to them with high quality CD player and Amplifier and I have to say all of them won with Beats in any aspect of sound at any frequencies. Even DRE's music (which I truly love, especially his 2001 album) did not seem any better on beats comparing to Sennheisers Beyers and Denons. What I would like to point out is that Beats have very studio-headphones-like sound. The bass is OK and has a proper snap, but it is not very musical. It does not soud relaxing and smooth as in audiophiles headphones. It does what Dre says - you hear the sound exactly as it was produced. You might think it is good, but now think why all audiophiles investing thousands of pounds in their systems and headphones (such as HD800, RS2, Orpheus/HE90, T1) do not listen to studio headphones at all? The point of listening is to take pleasure from it and cold, not very musical sound signature of studio headphones can not much with the sound of audiophile products. (talking about audiophiles and audiopile sound is a very good point as Beats cost more than many audiophile models).

I like these headphones for listening to bassy studio recorded music.
They are pretty much like a night club sound system on your head!
I don't think they are good for music that is live or for recordings that have quiet parts e.g Piano solos.
By no means are these headphones bad, but what I didn't fully research before i bought mine is that in effect they are amplified and the battery powered amplifier inside these headphones is tuned to exagerate what the drivers best cope with (frequency wise)
So I would urge people to consider the below:
You are not listening to the natrual frequency characteristics of the headphones (Nor your music) - they have circuitry inside that colour it.
Adding another amplification stage in headphones reduces the signal to noise ratio - and you will notice more hiss in quiet passages in your music.
These do look very nice, they feel comfortable too - and they serve a purpose for when you want to really listen to loud bass.
You DO need to protect your hearing and not use too much at very high levels though!
I don't find they outperporm Koss unamplified headphones that retail at similar prices -for a faithfull sound reproduction of original sound.
These are NOT good for studio work - Sound isn't flat, you will make mistakes with EQ.
Finally you have to take into account, part of what you are paying for here is a sponsorship deal and your cash isn't fully going on the electronics and components.

Took delivery today. Great packaging but sound absolutely spectacular. Have Bose QC2 and QC3's and much as I love them there is no comparison on the sound. First review I have ever written but feel compelled due the quality of the product....

Excellent pair of headphones, what can I say... actually the best thing I've bought in a long time and I got mine for under £200. I've listened to hip-hop, dance, classical, rock, afro beat and they're excellent. I closed my eyes listening to Tiesto - Urban Shakedown and I was actually there... If you know what I mean. Simply Stunning

I purchased these headphones in June 2009 for £280 at my local electronic store. It came in superb packaging as seen here, and it's very own transportable case, etc, etc.
I listen to mainly Hip-Hop, and I purchased this product based on that specification. I went home and plugged them into my PC sound socket, the sound was great, clarity supreme. I listened much to for the first few weeks to artists such as Jay-Z (Big Pimpin', The Takeover) Eminem (Stan, The Real Slim Shady) and Dr Dre himself (Big Ego's, Murder Ink and Nuthin' But A G Thang being my favourites).
I listened regularly over the next months, using them every time I put on some music. Until one day I was listening to them on my sofa and when I was getting off I accidentially knocked them 2 feet to the floor-WHACK- the "Beats by Dre" arch at the top of the headphones broke, a big huge crack appeared in between them. Now anyone who owns these headphones would know the top of the headphones are there for a reason. You can't listen when the top is broke, as there is a sharp metallic piece underneath that carries the wires, and it would cut you open pretty easy if you are not careful.
I was forced to improvise to listen, I had to place a sock on the top of my head to upon which I placed the headphones, to prevent any injury from incuring. 3 months later after the initial incident my headphones were on my kitchen chair and I was pulling a tea towel away from it. I knocked the headphones off my accident, breaking "Beats by Dr Dre" logo completely off the headphones and more annoyingly, preventing them from producing any sound.
The headphones are utterly useless now, and if I may say, dangerous for any person trying them on due to the design once the top is gone. It would be great if I could still listen to them today as the sound is great, but when I dropped them the first time, they were dangerous, and the 2nd time they were a safety hazard and broke for good. Monster, please make any further releases much more durable, because when I pay £280 for a pair of headphones I expect them to work for 10 years plus, not less than a year.
