These earphones were to replace an old pair of Shure earphones that I left by mistake on an airplane. I had been looking at other makes, but knew what to expect with Shure.



I can wear these for hours without them falling out or making my ears ache and the sound isolation is so good that I can just wear them as earplugs without anything playing through them if i need too.



The sound quality is very good. I've not really used many other earphones other than the old Shure ones I lost and the standard Apple ones that come with Apple products, but can say that I've no complaints with these ones at all.



If you are looking to purchase a pair of good quality earphones that will last you (remember to take them with you when you leave the plane), I'm sure anyone would be happy with a pair of SE420s'

By any measure, these are expensive headphones, but they do sound incredible, with a very full, clear, concise and immediately responsive sound, and great sound isolation.



In case you're worried, let me say now that you can definitely hear the difference in quality - they're unlike anything I'd heard before, including my old Shure 210s, which are already streets ahead of your average earbud or high-street in-ear headphones.



The treble is clear and full with powerful vocals and good strong bass too, but it doesn't sound forced or artifically boosted.



I always think a sign of higher-grade sound equipment is when you can listen at low volume and still feel all the detail in the music - this is very much the case here.



They are comfortable to wear - especially with the foam tips, which come in 3 sizes to ensure a good fit. As with other in-ear monitors, they do have quite a narrow soundstage which won't suit everyone, and you do get a little noise up the cable but if you wear them hooked over your ears, this is minimised.



You do need a good quality sound source - they will accurately show up the inadequacies of a low bit-rate mp3, but high bit-rate or lossless encodings can sound really mind-blowing.



At this price, you do worry about breaking them. It would be nice if the cables could be replaced separately to the actual IEMs as the join is a potential weak point, but Shure do at least have a 2-year warranty compared to the 1-year the competition tends to offer, in case something goes wrong.



If you are pretty serious about your music and can stomach the cost, you'll love every minute with a pair of these. I hope never to have to go back to "normal" headphones, but they already have me wondering what the top-of-the-range 3-driver Shure 530s might offer - and this is very dangerous thinking indeed!

After unpacking the ear phone I had to choose the right sleeves. Not easy, because there were 7 different ones. I started with the medium soft foam sleeves. Not the right choice, but it worked. After a few days I tried the small ones and it was a fit. Not just better in my ear, but the sound was also much better.

Used on my iPod touch it does sound better than the original Apple earphone, but used in combination with my CD disk player, a whole new (musical) world opened. Everything, from low to high was in the music. Nothing was pronounced. In the lower octaves you can hear the difference between a bass drum and a bass guitar. As well in the middle and high range all the instruments are separated. The human voice sounds as if the artist is standing in front of you.

It was not a cheap earphone, but surely for the price I paid on Amazon, worth every penny

I have been with Shure for some time now. Initially started with the SE110, which was without doubt an amazing upgrade from the Sony earphones I had. When I first played music through the SE110 I remember feeling my hair raise, they were leaps ahead of the Sony's, and provided clarity I was not expecting, and did not even know could be achievable using earphones.

This being said, my story with the SE110 was cut short when I lost them. Having liked them so much, I decided to buy the next in line: SE210. This time, I was very disappointed. I was expecting the same sensation as when I first tried the SE110, with obviously better effect and clarity. None of that. The 210's sounded similar, if not worse than the 110s I had. It was a strange experience, as the instruments sounded great, the sound was clear and I could distinguish clearly and beautifully the different notes. However, as a whole, the music sounded dead and lifeless.

So I stayed with the SE210 for a couple of months, trying to convince myself that I will get used to them, and trying different fits/earbuds. Nothing helped and I decided I needed to change. I didn't know where to look, and since Shure disappointed me with the 210s, I thought of changing brands. Once in the store, I got sentimental and decided to give Shure a final try, and purchased the SE420.



I plugged them in my ears, hoping that I had done the right thing in buying them. I spent 5 minutes trying to chose what song was going to be the first one played on this pair. I finally went for Supertramp, closed my eyes and hoped for the best ...



Just like what happened with Susan Boyle, I was awoken by a beautiful sound, the music was clear, bass was pushy, treble was nicely done and the 'wow' effect came back!



I have to say the SE420 is a fantastic pair of earphones. Miles ahead of the 210 and 110 and are definitely worth the money. Music is crystal clear and undistorted. Bass is beautiful and not overwhelming and the high frequency response is stunning.

The soundstage effect is awesome, I can hear every click, every echo, I even hear the singer's breath in some songs. Without hesitation, I would say that if you are looking into buying the SE420 I would say go for it, they blew back life into my music.



Happy I finally stayed with Shure..

I upgraded from the E3cs in mid 2008 and bought the push to hear (PTH) device as well. I use them with my iPod / iPad, mostly on planes, around the house and listening in bed. I lost my first set and liked them enough to replace them with the same in 2010, despite the price.



SOUND QUALITY: Outstanding. Bass and mids much better than ECxs which I thought were weak. Don't mess about and go straight for the foam yellow sleeves. A good fit in the ear canal is essential to generate the highest quality. It's a good idea to order an extra pack of these when ordering as they deteriorate reasonably quickly and 'go hard', causing sound leak and reduced quality. Extras are inexpensive.



Also has an extra benefit for those of you that are modest about your music taste. Others can't hear what you are listening to. My wife in a silent room lying 2 feet from me can't hear when it's about 1/2 volume (which is as loud as you'd want it). Your fellow passengers on trains and buses etc would have little chance of an AC/DC appreciation session.



DESIGN: The ear buds are great. Unlike my E3cs, they lie flush in your ear, meaning that if you are lying down (in bed or on a plane - for you lucky first class passengers) it's comfortable and you don't ram them down your ear canal.



I bought the Push to Hear (PTH) gizmo with my first set which seems unnecessarily large and a bit "plasticy" to be honest. It died about a year later and I don't really miss it. Shure could have done a bit better. The switch requires more a than reasonable effort, but I guess it does avoid accidental switching. That said, when it worked - it worked as advertised. You can hear what's being said through the mic easily enough. It doesn't pause your music though, just shuts the sound off to the headphones.



PACKAGING: They give you a neat little zip case for them. Problem is that it's a tight fit to get all the bits in if you also have a PTH unit. I recommend just using it for the phones and sticking the PTH device in your bag separately.



SUMMARY: They're great. No "buyers regret" on my purchase. I've got plenty of use out of them and will continue to enjoy them for many years to come (if I don't lose them). I owned the first set for over two years and never suffered the wire issues that some mention. Thoroughly recommended.

I waited ages before finally taking the plunge and buying these - £250 is a lot of money for a pair of earphones - but after a fair amount of experimentation, there's no doubt in my mind that it was money well spent. But beware - it's essential that you put the time and effort in to get these 'phones right. Here are a few ideas based on my own experience:-



1. It's been said time and again, but make sure you have the correct fit!! It took me two weeks of squeezing and shoving (and fairly painful ears as a result) to realise that the foam tips were not for me. I eventually worked out that the conical-shaped clear silicon ones fitted best - this after a visit to an ear-clinic for a routine de-waxing (recommended before you stuff anything into your ear-canal), where I was told that my ear canals narrowed inwards, so the only effect of trying to shove the foam tips in was that they were squeezed back out again. The difference between correct and incorrect-fitting buds is about £200 worth of earphone - they sound totally average unless you get a complete seal. I'm sure that all the negative reviews on this product are due to the fact that the reviewers aren't getting the tips in securely enough, so I can't stress enough how vital this is. I'm about to get some custom-made ones, as although the silicon cones give a good seal, they're not that comfortable.



2. Make sure your music is ripped at a decent level. I've re-recorded most of my stuff at 320kbps with VBR, and although I don't claim to be an audiophile, I can easily tell the difference between the higher level and the Apple default. I tried lossless as well, but to be honest I couldn't hear any difference, but it's not difficult to run a few tests yourself.



3. I'm hooked on iPods because the overall ease-of-use is so much better than anything the competition has to offer, but I've read a lot of criticism about iPod sound quality. I managed to get around this for the princely sum of about £15 by getting the FiiO headphone amp, which plugs into the bottom of the iPod and bypasses the built-in headphone amp. The difference is significant - I get an annoying background "burbling" on my iPod when I use the jackplug (which is ironically much more noticeable with top-quality earphones like the Shure's), but this disappears with the FiiO amp, leaving a much cleaner and tighter sound, especially at low volume on acoustic pieces. If you're not short of cash, you can upgrade to a much higher-spec headphone amp such as the Graham Slee Voyager, although it will cost you as much as your MP3 player, so you'll need to be fairly serious about your sound!



When I first bought these 'phones, I thought I'd made a big mistake. But after taking the time to ensure I was getting the best out of them, I think it's possibly the best value-for-money purchase I've ever made. I hardly ever listen to music other than when I'm on the move, and the Shure's have massively increased my listening pleasure. Yes, they're expensive. But a similar standard hi-fi system at home would cost you thousands of pounds and you wouldn't listen to it half as often. That point alone justifies the cost.

About 12 months ago, I bought a pair of Shure SE 500PTH earphones. Recently, the isolative outer layer on both cords leading to the transducers broke! They shorted out soon after. Now this - supposedly - is a premium product - and a very expensive one at that! I have Emailed Shure UK to complain, but they just ignored me on each and every occasion. So, I would urge everybody contemplating purchasing any products from Shure, to think again.

And I really did. I bought the hype about the tri driver pure sound. Maybe I was kidding myself, but I really thought they sounded great. A sound so rich and clean that it almost seemed worthy of the sacrifice required for that awkward pulling and bending to get them in place. But that sound it was great, even though after a while my ears hurt. Itchy and scratchy, it was me not them, because I had paid so much it had to be me, so when I the rubber protective sleeve came loose I finally saw that it was me. I did not deserve them. They were precious magical objects only worthy of the righteous, which is why I started to go deaf. Or that's what I thought. Yes in one ear I had to be deaf, because how was it that that I could only hear this beautiful music in one ear? It was me not you surely? Like a fool I persevered I bought another one and they did it again, but this time not just to me there were others.



Well my friend you can keep your poor build quality and bulky frame and uncomfortable ear ache to yourself. I've moved on.

Having owned both the SE115 & SE210 models prior, I can fully recommend these. Being a bit of a sound quality 'geek' both in terms of home and car hifi, the SE530's exceeded my expectations. To gain the biggest quality gains, the source and compression of the music makes a big difference obviously. Haven't really used them out and about much so can't comment on their durability but I think the extra care required after reading other reviews is worth it. A good price on Amazon aswell should seal the deal.

Having had a pair of over-the-ear headphones for several years now, I decided to go back to some in-ear headphones when mine finally broke (RIP. They served me very well). I've never spent more than £30 on a pair of headphones before and really spent some time to look through various websites and reviews to help with my decision. After going through lots and lots of options I decided to go for these (Shure SE115). The reviews were excellent and I managed to find them elsewhere for £60.



First thing about them is that they isolate noise from the outside very, very well. I was very impressed. Walking along a busy road with these on I couldn't hear any of the traffic that was passing by - these ranged from cars to buses. All I could hear was the music. Brilliant!



I'm using these with my iPhone and a mic extension lead and it works and still sounds great. I've had real problems with my last headphones as I could not hear the other person when taking a call - but because these headphones are pushed in (and stay in) I could hear perfectly.



So... mostly great. However... some things that I don't like. First is that you are recommended to wear the wires around the ear. Not sure what the long-term problems are with this, but we'll see. Wearing them with the wires looped around the ears isn't uncomfortable, by the way. I just worry that there's more stress on the wires. Next up is the 3mm jack. It's quite bulky and it doesn't fit comfortably when I clip the mic to the top of my shirt.



I guess there are minor gripes. Overall the headphones are really good. I am very happy to have spent the money on these. They come with a 2-year warranty, which you have to register for - but worth doing for the price that you pay for them.

After alot of looking around I was tempted to go for some of the more expensive options around the £100 region. However, I settled on these and have no complaints. Whilst more expensive options will have better technical performance this is pretty much totally undetectable in the real world out on the street, in the train or down the gym where there is significant ambient noise.



These earphones are a definite improvement over my old earphones that came with the Ipod, and the "In ear" design also blocks out much of the distracting ambient noise which adds to the sound quality. The in ear buds are good for down the gym and feel far more secure in the ear than my old ones did.



A good earphone so look no further.

I've been a fan of Shure's previous model, the E2C, for quite some time. I have had several pairs which I either lost or they died from natural causes. I have also tried a few other brands but found the E2C the best in their price range.



When my last pair of E2C's died I began to consider the SE115's. My biggest concern was the jump in price - an extra £20 (or 40%). I eventually decided to go for the SE115's and I can say I was pleasantly surprised. The most noticeable improvement was the quality of the Bass, which is far more pronounced, producing a more balanced sound. Still the same good build quality and noise insulation.



Overall I think they are great, but I think that budget will play a big part in the decision making process.



Many people report canal in-earphones to be uncomfortable. They do feel a bit alien at first. Do read the instructions to make sure you are inserting them correctly. Make sure you are using the correct size, drop to a smaller bud size if needed. They do become more comfortable after time as the buds bed in. I'm a big fan of canal earphones, they block out most noise very well, but I can still hear the announcer when I travel on the tube and trains.

Even on my first listen i was blown away by the quality of these phones. If i'm honest i did get them cheaper from another site but my god am I glad I did. The sound isolation is perfect I literally couldn't hear a single thing playing my tv at a loud volume. The comfort is astonishing and the base even stands up to the outstanding 'beats' by Dr. Dre headphones.



Anyway looking for a headphone upgrade? Buy these. Best headphones shy of £60, maybe even 100.

I'm really disappointed with these earphones. It may be that my ears are peculiar but I've tried all the available ear-pieces and cannot get a good fit. The only way the sound is half-decent is if I ram the piece into my ear canal as far as possible, but then it doesn't stay in place. Without a decent seal the sound is of course terrible. These aren't for everybody.

I have only used these headphones for a few weeks, but so far I have been impressed with them.

It takes a while before you realise how to get the best sound of them, as you need to insert the earphones quite deep into your ear. But once you get the hang of it, it is superb sound quality, helped with the excellent external noise cancelling.



A friend had these earphones for a few years and was very pleased with them. He abused them a bit which resulted in breakage of the cables, but this was replaced quickly, covered by the 2-yr guarantee.



So I have been very impressed with them so far. Hopefully it will remain that way! ;-)

First of all, the sound quality of these earphones is fantastic. Once you find the right fit insert for your ear, the bass really shines through. They do a great job of shutting out all external noise, so are perfect for travelling. All of this is let down by the poor build quality. As other reviewers have commented, the wire becomes rigid and brittle and tends to split at the point where you loop it over your ear. I had my first set replaced under warranty, but the second pair has also just split. I also found the rubber housing comes away from the plasic and ended up having to superglue mine to keep the housing together. I expected a lot more from such an expensive set of earphones and is a shame given the great sound quality.

I bought a pair of EC3s some time ago and within a year one of the drivers blew. Fortunately, they were still in warranty so Shure replaced them with a pair of SE210 earphones. The sound quality from these is great and with a proper fit the sound isolation is excellent. Unfortunately, as another reviewer has pointed out, the build quality is very poor. The wire used is not fit for purpose because after 9 months of normal use the wire began to split at the point where it wraps around the back of the ear. Within a week the second cable split in exactly the same position. I contacted Shure customer service who pointed out that the warranty period was based on the first pair that I bought so I didn't qualify for a replacement. I did point out that the warranty wasn't an issue because under the sales of goods act these earphones were inherently faulty due to the cabling problem (which, if you Google it, is a common problem). They weren't having any of it so I have resorted to fixing them with insulating tape. Not what you would expect from a "high end" pair of earphones. These are my second pair of Shure headphones and neither pair lasted more than a year. Save your money and buy something that will last.

I have had these headphones for about a year and am now looking for replacements as they have broken. The headphones were looked after, always packed away in their case when not in use and were only used on train and plane journeys and at the gym. The sound they produced never warranted the amount i paid for them, my previous sennheisers were half the price of the shures and in my opinion handled my ipod music a lot better. My sennheisers also lasted longer and they were subjected to far worse treatment. My advice - steer well clear and invest your money elsewhere

The noise isolation and sound quality on these are superb. They come with the usual small, medium and large silcone fittings, but not foam. There are a couple of reasons why they don't get the full 5 stars through. The modular design with the jack and the way the cables loop over the top of your ears can be uncomfortable after long periods of time. I tend to use a clip to keep the weight of them off my ears. Also the cables are very thick in comparison to others I've encountered, even much cheaper headphones have got better quality cables.

I have been impressed by the sound quality of these earbuds, and good sound isolation is achieved without causing any discomfort. You do need to use the longer cable extension, though. The simple system of looping the wires back over the ears does seem to work very well, although a little bit more care is needed to orientate the buds properly when putting them in. The sound quality is excellent, and I haven't been disappointed by lack of bass as some reviewers have. Very happy with this purchase.

Bought these to replace some Bose in-ear phones which just didn't work for me. They kept falling out my ears at the gym. The Shure ones are a much better fit meaning that the sound is highly improved.

Previously I have owned two pairs of Shure's E2C earphones, and it was due to the excellent sound quality and durability that i purchased these. They have a slight improvement in terms of sound quality, and defiantly more robust build. I use these jogging and unlike alot of earphones they always stay snug in my ears, this is what first sold them to me.



The Noise Cancelling is superb, to the point of being dangerous! You are totally unable to hear traffic, which can be a blessing, but I sometimes need to take out one earphone to make sure.



Shure's 2 year warranty stands up well as after owning a pair for 18 months one earbud stopped working, and the headphones were replaced asap without questioning.



It is worth nothing that although they fit perfectly in my ears with the correct size earbud, other people seem to struggle to get a decent fit due to the unusual shape, so they are not for everyone, but its worth seeing if they work for you.

Definitely!! Only had them for 3 days or so and they are just amazing. I previously owned sennheiser CX300's then CX95's which were good but nothing on these shure's!! At first they were strange to wear and they do have an odd shape, but after a few hours they are fine. Shame there are no foam tips - something which I would recommend in investing in.



The SE102's perform amazingly with all types of music, even when there is a song with say heavy guitars, synths, bass, drums and layered vocals they are all clear and well mixed. Something that to better would mean forking out for a decent pair of multi-driver headphones (over 100 quid for a something good!). The sound is crystal (and i mean crystal) clear, and I hear new things in most songs every time I use them (such as in Muse - undisclosed desires, the whispering voices in the second verse). I have been listening to Score by dream theater and the sound is just unbelievable with the orchestra just sounding brilliant, im amazed every time they are turned on. They blow the sennheisers away in all departments apart from the bass (where the shure's slightly lack. And i mean SLIGHTLY - not to the extent of older shure earphones!). I guess the lack of is due to the compromise of having such clear sound, which im not bothered about, and nothing a little bit of EQ'ing cant sort! The cables are also really sturdy and thick and I get no noise from then they rub on something. The noise blocking from these is great too, I cant hear a thing while listening to music, even when outside in a busy street!



Overall, for 60 quid - best bang for your buck you'll ever spend! If your looking to spend £40-80 on new earphones, GET THESE! Simple.

I've had the SE210, SE310 and now have these, the SE420. There is a marked improvement as you move up through the range. Shure customer service is the best I have experienced.



You need to take the time and learn how to put them in your ears, it sounds stupid, but do pay attention to the instructions. That little twist as you put them in is important. The over the ear wire can take some getting used to but it does make the fit more secure.



There is not deigning that these are fantastic.

When you buy headphones that cost this much I tend to find a sharp intake of breath is needed! For me anything over £50 for an in ear headphone can be considered considerable outlay. However the sound improvement is good and to my ear these headphones sound great. However the percentage increase over say a £40 set of headphones is not quite what I would have liked but it is the same law of diminishing returns that you get with things like Hi-fi cabling etc - If you want the best the product volume/market drops and you have to pay more for it! The other negative is that you have to really work to make sure these headphones fit but, when they do, the rewards are worth it and on transatlantic flights all noise vanishes other than the film or music you are listening to.



These are recommended but 5 stars is hard to give based on the price and for that reason I have to give four stars.

I have had a pair of SE420's for approximately 6 weeks now and I can't get the damn things out of my ears................No not because they are stuck but because I can't stop listening to them. I have a pair of Grado SR60i headphones through which I listen to music at home when the rest of the house is quiet (The Grado's are open headphones so leak sound in and out) but when my kids are around or when the other half is watching TV in an adjacent room I listen to the Shure's. The Grados are fantastic but the Shure's are absolutely sublime (in fairness the Grado's are half the price). The clarity and range is phenomenal. The sound isolation is a little off putting at first (it's total when you have music playing through the 420's) but once you get used to that and the snug fit they truly are awesome. One word of caution: if your tunes are in a compressed format these phones will show up any shortfall in the quality, they really are that good.

My 420's took a week or two to burn in, but I am a big audiophile and can assure anyone, these are just sublime in-ear phones. They are comfortable, well made and the soundstage, bass, treble and mid ranges are so well balance with a wide range of music.....quite simply these are so good anyone who thinks they are not is really not able to tell good from bad.....buy without thinking, I've tried many others that do not last, do not provide hi-fi quality but these Shure's are the business. Yes, the SE530 is better (I've listened to those too) but not by much, and certainly not by the price margin.....................buy these!!

 "Disappointing sound quality for the price" 2010-07-30

After losing my Etymotic ER6is, I needed a new set of headphones for my shiny new iPod Touch. Having read all the Amazon (and other) reviews for Shure, Etymotic and other makes of in-ear headphones between £70 and £150 it seemed like the SE210s offered a good balance of comfort, price and build & audio quality.



But I really am disappointed: the soundstage is flat, the overall sound is confused and the top-end is not clear. Given the reviews, I thought that it might be the iPod, so, ever hopeful, I tested the Shure's on my main hifi system and then tested the iPod with other headphones to be certain. I then tried all sorts of music - classical, dance, hip-hop, rock, jazz etc but found that it really is the Shure's that are lacking.



I will confess to being a bit of a stickler for audio quality and I'm sure that many people will be perfectly happy. These headphones are comfortable, seem well built and I like the matching mic and remote. But sound quality is the most important thing for me and I would happily buy much more expensive headphones if I could afford to lose them!



I am now saving up for a new pair of ER6is - I know that some people have had trouble with them, in fact I found the Shures more comfortable, but the sound quality is genuinely outstanding.

These earphones produce the most detailed sound of any I've used so far, there are too many bad points....



The main one is the lack of bass. If the iPod/Phone had the facility to adjust the base levels I would pass on this point, but they don't. The only one available is Bass Boost which the iPod can't handle and the sound becomes distorted. This is unacceptable for earphones of this price.



The memory foam earbuds are a very good idea, (you squish then up, pop them in your ear and wait for them to expand) but they wear out very quickly and are fiddly to put in as you have to hold them in your ear for about 10 seconds whilst pulling your ear lobe down until foam expands. Not very convenient if you're walking along the street and you fancy listening to some music.



The Silicon earbuds are similar to those found on most earphones, but they put too much pressure in my ears and I found them uncomfertable after a short time. They work their way out and I found myself constantly pushing them back in.



The cable goes around your ears and under your chin, however this causes problems with my glasses. when I try to wear them like conventional earphones, the weight of the cable pulls them out of my ears.



All in all, the detail these earphones can extract from the iPod is exceptional, but the lack of bass means they only get 3 stars.

First pair broke within the first 6 months of purchase, left headphone stopped working.

Sent back to the address customer service provided and received a brand new set very quickly, so thumbs up for the customer service.



I am writing this review because my second pair has now broken a month after the warranty period, this time I can just hear constant static every time the cable is slightly moved.

The sound that these headphones produce and the customer service are great no doubt, but the reliability of this product is a real letdown.



Having used the product for 2 years I also notice that the cable is too heavy and the headphones constantly have to be repositioned in the ear or they drop out, and is very noisy as it bounces about when on the move ruining the sound quality.



If you are willing to spend this amount of money on a pair of headphones no doubt you want to get the right product...This is not it.

These sound very clear indeed and you hear things in music that you hadn't noticed before.....but where is the bass?



Would recommend for classical, accoustic music etc but for modern rock, hip hop, pop avoid these and get some Klipsch X1 instead(on amazon today for £17.99), they have all the clarity of the Shures as well as perfectly balanced bass - best earphones I've ever owned.

Now, I've never liked in-ear earphones before trying these ones, mostly because they never stayed in place in my ears (I suppose my ears are a little smaller than average). But the Shure Se210's come with a good selection of sleeves, offering something for all ears; and one of the smaller ones fitted my ears perfectly. With that the earphones stay well in the ears and the blocking of outside noise is nothing sort of amazing. I can easily ignore people talking to me, which sometimes frustrates my colleagues.



Now even after getting these (I've had them for 6 months now), my favorite ones still are the Bang & Olufsen ones (which I've had for years). They have a hinge that goes behind the ear and leaves then the speaker right in front of your ear. So the design isn't as intrusive as the Shure's. But because of the design, in a noisy place you have to turn the volume really high to hear them properly. This obviously is annoying for two reasons. First, I don't want to listen to my music too loud. And second, I absolutely hate those people who have their music so loud you can hear them half a carriage away in tube.



So I needed something that would work in noisy places such as the tube or the street. The noise canceling headphones (as brilliant they are) are still too cumbersome (and a bit too expensive for the purpose). So it had to be noise blocking. Now, I had a pair of decent Creative noise blocking headphones, but I never liked the sound of them (it was as if the sound was coming from under ground), and I was a bit afraid that it would always be a problem with noise blocking headphones. But after trying out the Shure ones, I found this to be not so.



The sound (despite the speaker being in your ear) is clear and very balanced. These are no bass boost earphones. If all you want to hear is bass, then these are not the headphones for you - stop reading. Now I mostly listen to heavy metal, classical with some pop/rock thrown into the mix and these earphones work perfectly. As many other reviews I read also highlighted, the focus seems to be more on the high and mid ranges, with the bass not dominating, but being in balance with the highs and mids. Though I now often have to set the volume on my mp3 player to absolute minimum so that it's not too high in some situations (for me that is, others have no chance of hearing anything from your earphones).



Now that being said, I do still prefer my B&O headphones, because they don't stress my ears as much as the Shures ones do (you can still keep the Shrue's in your ears for 6hours and be fine). But the not in-ear design leaves you feeling more free and I think the sound is marginally better (well they are marginally more expensive). But if there is noise in the background I always switch to my Shures, which actually is quite often. So yes, I do like these, a lot.
