I think these headphones are great, although they do not block out all of the surrounding sounds, they do contribute greatly to a better listening experience. Although whilst commuting you do find yourself turning the volume up slightly, and the reason why i got these in the first place is so i could reduce the volume of my music. So to not damage my ears in the long run, and to carry on enjoying music. The quality of the sound is good i suppose, although recently i have tried the Bose noise reduction headphone and they are by far superior, in comfort sound and noise reduction capabilities. But for the price of the Sony's, they are well worth the money.
Check the Bose headphones because i have tryed them and they are exceptional.

Have now had my Sony digital NC500 headphones for 6 months and have tried them on 2 long haul air flights, one 10 hr coach ride and in the garden whilst mowing the grass.
On the Air flights the results where amazing and the adaptors fit the plane sockets. They totally eliminated all the various noises and made listen to the movies a real pleasure as the volume need not be set to max with distortion. In fact after 9 hrs continuous use you do NOT want to remove them because then cabin noise seems so loud. Have tried all kinds of earphones, headphones etc and have never found anything very long term comfortable as I wear Specs, but these Sony phones are just right.
On the 10hr coach ride they did exhibit a low frequency booming sound, this could be minimised by the right NC selection, but to be fair the journey was on an extremely bumpy road with loud panel thumping noises, all other noise was eliminated and was still possible to hear MP3s in comfort even if the journey was not.
In the garden the tractor grass cutter noise is reduced to a very acceptable level without having to have my ZEN MP3 player set to max.
They come in a very nice travel case with adaptors, charger and if required battery pack, I am now going to get another set for my wife thereby eliminating the need to take 2 different charges when traveling. Overall they are very impressive, but I have not compared them to any other NC headphones so can not say how much better than other makes.
Could ramble on about the features but they all be done by other reviewers, so if you can afford the price get them.

In order to test these headphones before I bought them I went to my local Apple Store, they had the Bose Quiet Comfort 3's, Quite Comfort 15's and these the Sony NC500D's.
The Apple Store is always a noisy place, loads of people + background music.
First the QC3's - Before I tried them I thought that these would be my favourite, they are a brand that is clearly linked to top of the range performance and quality and I liked the style. However, when I tried them on I found them really uncomfortable. The only way I can describe them is that although they cancelled a lot of the noise I still felt like I could feel the noise! Think of it like this, if I go into a loud environment like a night club or if you have every experienced concord taking off at Heathrow, you often don't so much as hear noise but you can feel it battering your ear drums. When I wore these headphones I could still feel my ear drums flexing, in fact it felt worse! My wife describe it like someone trying to stick a straw down your ear to suck out the innards. Not to mention that I could still hear quite a lot.
Second the QC15's. Initially I wasn't as keen on these as the QC 3's but again as they were Bose I thought they would be amazing. Although these cover the entire ear the noise cancellation was almost the same as the QC3's. Although they were more comfortable! they just didn't work well enough.
Finally, these the NC500D's... Excellent, very very comfortable and far (far...far) better noise cancelling performance than either Bose. When I put these on I really noticed just how noisy the store was! The sound cancelling quality was excellent and music play back was also stunning. I immediately wanted these!
So why only 4 instead of 5 stars, well I don't think the 99% is an accurate figure! When they were switched on without playing music, they didn't completely cancel out the background noise I could still hear voices although they were significantly reduced and having said that, when I was listening to music, even at a low level I couldn't hear anything else but the music. I could easily give 5 star's, I do love them...

Worth every penny.
I know found myself lowering the volume when listening to music as the headset eliminates noises.
It is almost a magical experience when the world around gets quieter.
I tried the Bose and the Sony is just as good for a fraction of the price and it comes with more accessories.

I was amazed at those headphones, the sound is pretty good, but what impressed me the most was the noise cancelling. I didn't know that my office was so loud :P I wish I could have kept them, but unfortunately maybe my head is a bit too big, but they were hurting my jaw after a while of wearing them. That's why I give 3 stars... luckily I could send them back thanks to Amazon.
I would recommend those headphones to anybody who want awesome noise cancelling headphones... but do try them first.

When Sony launched the first in-ear noise-cancelling headphones, the MDR-NC10, I got a friend to buy me a set in Japan, as they weren't available in the UK at the time. They were a revelation - very effective noise-cancelling, particularly on long flights, and excellent sound quality. The only snag with them was that they weren't that comfortable - the earplugs were fixed and quite large, and could irritate your ears after a while.
When I saw that the follow-up model, the NC11, had three different sizes of earplug, it looked as if Sony had addressed my one complaint about the NC10, so I bought a set. Yes, the earplugs are lighter and more comfortable than on the NC10, but unfortunately the noise-cancellation is nowhere near as good. The NC10 did seem to genuinely get rid of the rumble of jet engines - as you turned them on, you could hear the noise recede. All the NC11 seems to do is to hiss loudly - there is a degree of noise attenuation, but it is nowhere near as effective as on the NC10. I'm not convinced that actually, all that the NC11 does, is hiss loudly enough to drown out other sounds.
I went back to my NC10s, which still work well. I may upgrade to Sony's new digital in-ear noise cancelling phones when they launch this year, but I'd advise people not to bother with the NC11.

I read other reviews before buying and writing this, and I must say I agree with most: if there is not really a background noise to cancell, there is an annoying hiss, like a SSSSSSSSSSS, but then, you can switch noise cancelling off (you do not need it if there is no background noise to cancell) In a plane, you do not notice the hiss, but noise cancellation is not complete, just a good reduction (I did not expect more for this price) that you can notice when you switch them off. On top of that, ear buds provide a good isollation by themselves, and sound quality is Ok (but I am not too demanding on this point). In a train or similar places, I have notice the hiss can still be audible while some noise is cacelled, so it will depend what annoys you most: I personally tend to get habituated to the hiss in less than a minute, so I still use them in these situations.

Canceling function works pretty fine. Earphones are comfortable and the fact that they are served with 3 different sizes of plugs is really handy. Yet, bass is overly exaggerated: so the after the nice noise cancelling and confort, the sound you end up getting is a little bit disapointing.

These look great - beautifully designed earphones and a cool (StarTrek inspired?) noise-cancelling controller. I've had several Sony headphones in the past and I like Sony's sound, preferring them to Sennheiser for example.
So I put in a battery, plugged the jack into my MP3 player and slid the earphones into my ears. Then I switched ON the noise cancellation. SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.
I switched OFF the noise cancellation and the electronic tinnitus stopped.
In a quiet environment these are bl**dy annoying. Really irritating.
I've since used them on a plane and they are OK - but the noise cancellation works to such a small extent and they are physically more cumbersome than conventional Sony buds. I'll probably never use them again.

I'm normally not the kind of person who write reviews on products and hotels and what not... However, as these were very good and for the money, excellent value I thought I'd better make tht fact known.
After much deliberation I decided to get 2 pairs of these for my partner and I. She wasn't too bothered either way but as we had 2 12 hours flights to New Zealand I knew we'd be spending a long time on the plane.
It has the airplance adaptor, and they do fold up nice and small so easy to fit into your cabbin luggage and surprisingly they really do work, to the point that you can watch "dialogue heavy" films without having the volume at full blast... You can still hear the plane but it's very muffelled and is a faint background noise.
As other reviews have said, the cups being a little small do squash your ears but no more than the standard headphones in airplanes, and I think we managed about 7 hours of wearing them before they got a bit uncomfortable, so not bad going in my opinion.
All in all, I'd definately recommended them as they do work and work pretty well. And for the money you really can't go wrong!

These headphones are great I disagree with some of the previous reviews.
The head phones are very comfortable and do not irritate the ears, they also come with a carry pouch and adaptor to use on the airplane.
The headphones themselves can be used as normal headphones or with the 'switch on' as noise cancelling headphones, this is important as some noise cancelling headphones only work with battery in these work as both.
They take one AAA battery which is provided and there are 2 settings on the ear piece, wide for airplanes and low for trains/buses etc, plus a power on/off switch.
The headphones fold up which is great, these are medium size headphones so big but comfortable to fold away.
The volume is controlled by the unit your plugging into i.e iPod or Airplane Volume remote, why would you need a built in volume peace? perfect.
If you look around on the market Sony sell noise cancelling headphones upto a price of £200, so these are a bargain in comparision.

Used on Flight to Australia, whilst not cutting out all noise, not to be expected at this price, they where comfortable to wear for long periods.They fold down flat and are easy to store when not in use. Sound clarity very good, vastly superior to the airlines standard issue. Overall very good value for money. Note: there is an airline plug included, although this is not made clear.

Broke my headphones before a flight to Australia so didnt have time to shop around and went for this model as it was relatively cheap. It did the job, just. Not really worth it getting a cheap set, better spending the extra. Uncomfortable after an hour or so.

Bought these at Heathrow. Having the noise cancel switch on or off makes not the slightest difference.
Difficult to put on the head due to the speakers naturally wanting to sit with the outside against your ear.
My set have ended up as tiny speakers for my work computer.
