 "Stunning cost-effective headphones" 2010-06-06
By Mr. P. MACCABE (Nottingham UK)
Over the years, I've tried many in-ear headphones. Some have been cheap and others have been very expensive such as the Shure SE310's.

And every pair so far has been a HUGE disappointment.

Sound quality has always been poor as has the fit-the blasted earbuds always dropped out irrespective of me changing the bud or not.

So it was with a little doubt, I took a flyer on a pair of these Sennheiser CX550's

These headphones are substantial in every way.

First thing to notice was the packaging, very good indeed and affording the headphones substantial protection.

Upon opening the box, getting the actual earphones out was a little tricky but after that I could feel the quality in their construction, metal earpieces,a nice tough feeling lead and a nice gold-plated mini-jack. They certainly won't fall apart after 5 minutes.

Accessories include an extension cable, various earpiece adaptors and a case.

Upon using them, I was shocked by how snug they fitted-like no other in-ear headphone I've used before. It was great thay fitted me straight out the box with no faffing about.

So now what about the sound?

In short-BRILLIANT!

I've used them via my Nokia N-900 mobile phone using either 320kbs MP3 or WMA Lossless 1440kbs with a variety of music inc AC/DC,Dead Can Dance and Rush.

They produce exceptional clear treble, a balanced mid-range and oodles of deep bass. I doubt if there is a musical genre they can't handle.

Bear in mind that this is the sound straight out the box, running in will enhance the sound quality still further.

Any drawbacks?

Well when played at the maximum volume of my N-900, there is a touch of distortion but in fairness they would be very loud at this point in any case. Also this is the maximum level of the internal amp of the phone so the distortion may be from elsewhere....

I make no bones about it,these are the very best in-ear headphones I've tried. I'm sure the 'Reference' products like the Sennheiser IE8's will be better but at about four times the price they should be!

Thoroughly recommended and an essential first upgrade for anybody with an iPod, iPhone or a quality MP3 or mobile phone.

 "Sernnheiser ear phones" 2010-05-30
By Mrs. D. I. Reynolds-hale (New Forest)
It's an OK product and obviously the sound is pretty good, particularly when it comes to cutting out extraneous noises. Maybe I have peculiar shaped ears but I find it quite hard to keep the earphones snugly and comfortably in place - particularly the left one. And yes I have tried all the various covers for them. But like everyone else, my biggest grievance is the ridiculously short cable. You have to buy something extra to attach to your upper arm for your ipod - more money - and I mislaid the extension (which I found heavy and created a bigger pull on the ears) the first day. Having said all that they are still better than anything I have previously used of their type.

"Great sound quality as long as you get the real deal" 2010-05-23
By T. J. Buckland (England, UK)
The Sennheiser CX 550 Style II are awesome! As long as you don't get any fake ones. I was unfortunate to buy a fake pair off eBay a month or so back that broke within 3 weeks. As soon as these arrive I could tell they were of a higher quality and the sound was brilliant. I bought my pair from Amazon directly and avoided any marketplace sellers. It can happen that legitimate sellers get fake stock and have no idea.

These headphones are a great buy it your looking to upgrade from a standard pair. My only gripe is that they don't have as much bass as its cheaper counterparts the CX300 & CX400. I'd get those if you love your bass. These headphones are a lot crisper than the ones just mentioned and I've owned a pair of both. The CX550's are a great all rounder and they are 100x better than any stock headphones from Apple or any cheap pair (under £20). They simply have a better clarity of sound and the high and mid tones are a lot more clear. I think if you're willing to spend over £100 on an MP3 player then £50 on a pair of great earphones is a good idea.

Go buy them, you won't regret it!

 "Don't last long" 2010-05-18

As others have written, these earphones do sound good. Mine however stopped working after 4 months of fairly light use. Disappointing when you pay a little extra thinking that you will be receiving a more robust product!

"Earplugs, not really earphones, made in China" 2010-05-08
By Technocrat (UK)
People buy Sennheizer CX 550 Style mainly to use them with Nokia headset adaptors for 2.5mm jack, as these are they have a short cable AND no bulky in-line volume control. So, I bought CX 550 to replace Nokia HS-45 earbuds that came with AD-56 2.5mm headset adaptor (the adaptor carries an answer button and a microphone).

These earphones make little sense if used with MP3 players, as then one needs to use an extension cable that comes in the kit. This cable is too long and the extension connector hanging effectively on your ears creates discomfort. Look at CX-300 II (half cheaper, slightly more bass) or a different make, if a long cable without a microphone is required.

For Nokia 3.5mm socket or iPhone one may want to look at Senns MM50 (similar frequency response), which come with a microphone and an answer button. The plug pinouts are different for iPhone and Nokia, so choose the appropriate version.

First impression: It is not a reference device, which means it sounds differently from the original mix. The test was performed on 256 kbps mp3 recordings (rock and classical, not hip-hop), on Nokia E71 and 5230 phones. Then I tried them on Yamaha RX-V465 AV amplifier digitally linked to Panasonic DMP-BD65 and running the compressed music enhancer. Further comparison to reference Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro reference headphones revealed overly emphasised bass, some distortion in midrange and suppressed high frequencies (I would say above 12kHz). They sound better on "Rock" setting of the equalizer, as it adds volume on the frequencies suppressed in these earphones.

Impressions after a couple of days: getting used to them. The double flanged eartips are very comfortable. The sound seems to become slightly better (known burning-in effect), but still imperfect. If you own reference headphones, you will be disappointed. Spent tonight two hours trying to correct the sound with an equalizer. It did not work. The sound still lacks space and is muffled in the high end.

Another day passed. My wife stole them for a long trip on a train.

Sound isolation is decent, comfort is OK (I am very sensitive to this), the drivers have metal housings, plastic outside, good leads/connectors, made in China plus a reference to Sennheiser Germany on the box, very high quality packaging, obviously original.

Conclusions: good value, good choice (almost unique) if one needs isolators for a Nokia 2.5mm headset adaptor, above average quality sound, not a reference quality, below the audiophile standards and below the upper quality limit of an average business phone.

"Great but fairly short lived." 2010-06-09
By C. West (Aberdeen)
I bought these specificly for my Gym visits on weekday mornings. Sound quality was excellent, no complaints about that whatsoever. However because they are constantly in use in a sweaty situation I expected them to be built to last. They seemed to go rusty or at least a dodgy colour pretty quickly to the point where I didn't really like putting them in my ears anymore! Straight in the bin!

"Great headphone, but for short duration" 2010-06-06
By C. Desai (UK)
Pros:

This is a great headphone, excellent sound quality and build.

Also while used in gym (esp. for jogging) fits well and does not obstruct in any way.

Chord length is sufficient and headphone never touches neckline making it quite practical for gym if you want to listen to your music during workout.

Cons:

The only real drawback is that I cannot wear this headphone for time longer than half an hour at a stretch.

This is down to the size (and shape) of the headphone piece that fits in the ears. I consider my ears as normal shape (and size) and never had this issue with any other headphones (even Senheiser ones).

Slightly disappointed with this as I can't enjoy music continuously during my workout.

Conclusion:

This is a great headphone provided the size fits your ears (and that is somewhat a gamble as you will probably not know unless you have tried).

Hope this helps!

 "excellent" 2010-05-24
By Robinalyn
These headphones are of excellent quality. The sound is superb. They fit snugly over the ears, however after having them on for over an hour I have to free up the right ear because of the pressure on it. Having said that I am extremely happy with them.

 "good but dont last" 2010-05-20
By Mr. S. L. Currie (uk)
i own a pair of these and im writing this review after about a year of owning them, sound is still good but they are not built to last, mine has cellotape all over them from all the bare wires hanging, these are not made to just throw in your gym bag at the end of a session, there is wire hanging from the neckband, just doesnt stay in anymore, plastic bit by the connector has come loose and just basically held together by tape, only give 3 stars because of the sound, just wish they were a bit stronger

"Don't buy - they will fall apart after a fiew months use" 2010-04-09
By R. Hayes
As other reviewers have mentioned, they fall apart after a few months use. This has now happened to three pairs of my Sennheiser sports head phones. I have contacted Sennheiser on three occasions and they have failed to return any of my emails.
